Hosseini's use of imagery in this passage is demonstrative of the way Hassan's experiences have worn on him. By describing his face as having wrinkles, Hosseini shows that Hassan has had a difficult, tiring life. Even though Hassan and Amir are almost the same age, because of their different life experiences, they differ in how old they look. This passage, like the previous one, draws attention to how different Hazaras and Pashtuns live in Afghanistan. That Hassan, a boy the same age as Amir, looks so tired and old, clearly shows how the Hazara's way of life is different from the Pashtun's, and how it affects them.
